Lately, I’ve been getting many questions from clients about how to avoid the munchies when you’re high. Understandably, there is a lot of apprehension about consuming cannabis and then overeating or eating unhealthily.
Why Does Weed Give You The Munchies?
As a psychoactive drug, cannabis can affect your brain’s processing signals, making you think you’re hungry, when you’re full. No one should have to sacrifice their health when they want to consume cannabis, so I’ve written up seven things you can do to try to avoid the munchies when you’re high.
1. Create a Consistent Food Schedule Before Getting High
Consistent food schedules allow you to avoid feeling hungry at irregular times, regardless of consuming weed. Feeling full after meals and snacks will help you avoid last-minute munchies.
2. Distractions Work!
Train your brain to pivot to other thoughts and activities when snacking comes to mind while you’re high. Have a list of go-to activities that can distract your mind, such as journaling, listening to your fav podcast, going for a walk, or doing something creative like doodling or painting.
3. Brush Your Teeth
It might sound weird, but brushing your teeth is a great technique to avoid unnecessary snacking. The minty taste will not only be refreshing, but also taste bad with other non-minty flavors like chips, cookies, and other foods and drinks. It also works as a distraction activity, as listed above!
4. Switch It Up
It might be time to switch to a different product or strain. Munchie consumption largely depends on the type of strain you’re using, so switching to another product or strain can help you avoid feeling hungry after consuming.
5. Set Yourself Up for Success
Rid yourself of the munchie temptation by replacing unhealthy snacks with healthy ones at home (ex. root chips for potato chips). This way you can feel guilt-free if you do end up wanting to indulge. Also, delete food apps (permanently or temporarily) so you don’t override your desire to eat healthily in a moment of forgetfulness.
6. Get Physical
Exercising before you get high does wonders for the body and the mind and gives you grace if you do end up snacking while you’re high. Choosing an activity you love such as running, yoga, walking, or HIIT before you consume will help you offset the calories you eat.
7. Trick Your Palette
Things tend to be savory when high, so use this aspect of munchies to your advantage by eating healthy things you normally wouldn’t eat. If you typically stay away from Brussels sprouts, try cooking (or ordering) a balsamic-glazed roasted Brussels sprouts dish!
